Is Shareware for You?

Posted by admin in Coder Stuff

If you’ve been downloading programs and stuff from the Internet, you must have come across the term shareware and freeware at one point in time. Most of us don’t know the difference between shareware and freeware. Freeware is pretty easy to explain…it’s free to use, that’s all there is to it. Freeware is developed by an individual or a small company for the free use of others. Freeware and shareware are often downloadable from the Internet from sites like www.download.com.

Well, a shareware is actually a software developed by an individual or a company for a public domain that is available for use for a small fee. This small fee that we’re talking about is usually a very small, one-time-fee that won’t be more than what your dinner would cost. Depending on the developer of the shareware, usually sharewares are pretty funky and efficient. Because most of these shareware developers are not restricted with stringent rules and boundaries (and red tapes) like large software development companies, they are free to develop the shareware to meet with the demands of people like them. And often times, sharewares are pretty good.

Sharewares, unlike freewares, are protected by copyright laws. Usually, you can download the shareware from the internet for free use for a short period of time. This is called the ‘demo’ or ‘evaluation’ period. If the evaluation period is 15-days, you can freely use the shareware for 15 days without paying anything and when the 15 days is over, the shareware will automatically be disabled. You’ll need to pay the registration fee to continue using the shareware program. Once you’ve paid and registered the shareware, you’re eligible for technical assistance and upgrades.

You can copy and share the shareware with your friends and family but they would have to go through the same thing you have. Sharewares, remember, are not free. If they don’t register the shareware, they won’t be able to use the shareware when the evaluation period is over.

Sharewares are generally safe to use but there are those who embed harmful files into their download folders. When downloading sharewares, take a good look at the developer and check their background. The shareware developer should have a good reputation and a long history of developing shareware. Some unscrupulous people actually place adwares, malwares, worms, and spywares into the shareware. So, be careful.

Slogan Writing the Easy Way

Posted by admin in The Marketing Way

Picture the scene! You’re sat at home, leaning over the dining room table. Chewing your pen top, surrounded by receipts, entry forms, labels and all manner of comping paraphernalia.

For the twenty-fifth time you’ve asked yourself why you want to win a trip to America to see a basketball game with XYG lager and still you’re no closer to finding the answer. Sound familiar?

It’s no wonder you become disillusioned and disheartened. So what happens next?

You can resort to sending in a revamped chestnut which has won countless prizes either in it’s original form or revamped, for instance:

“Connoisseurs select them, promoter perfects them”

“Experts select them, customers prefer them”

That sort of thing!

Or, perhaps like me, you simply make yourself a nice hot cuppa, switch on the TV and see what’s been happening in your favourite soap. So, I thought, there’s got to be a better way. Seek and you shall find.

The answer came to me whilst ironing, of all things. Give your little grey brain cells a problem to work out, then instead of worrying, forget it, do some other task like gardening, ironing or cooking your lunch, and hey presto, when you least expect it, the answer pops into your head. So it was with slogan writing.

My four steps to successful slogan writing are: brainstorm, phrases, tiebreakers, sparkling slogans. I have won cars and holidays using this method.

Well, back to the ironing. Tedious job, but nevertheless, it was when inspiration struck. Instead of turning phrases round to see if they sound better in a tiebreaker, why not turn the whole slogan writing thing on it’s head.

Instead of writing a tiebreaker slogan to fit a competition lead-in line, why not write a slogan and then simply wait for the right competition to come along. Eureka!

Instantly the pressures off. How many times have you waited until the 29th of the month to hastily think up a slogan to fit a comp that closes on the 31st. Come on now. Confession time. Yes, of course you have. Me too.

Far better, don’t you think if you have ten or so wonderful slogans that you’ve spent time perfecting, from which to select one to fit that last minute competition. Wonderful.

No more last minute rushes. No pressure. No bitten finger nails. Just excellent slogans when you want them. Purr-fect ! Oops, sorry, that’s for my pet food comp!

Just imagine, if judges have waded their way through thousands of fifteen word, rhyming slogans, which sound sleepily similar - ZZZzzzzz. Oops nearly dozed off! Then wow! Your sparkling, short, snappy little number comes along. They sit up and take notice.

“Hey Fred, listen to this.” “That’s our winner.”

Magic words, eh? That’s what you’re aiming for. Let me give you an example.

My daughter decided she wanted to become a singer, “but”, she said. Why is there always a but? If you’re a parent, you’re probably no more nearer the answer than I am!

“But what?” I ventured.

“I can’t afford the equipment.”

“No worries”, I told her, “we’ll win it’, I said, more confident than I was feeling, when she gave me a three week deadline to win it.

So we took ourselves off to the newsagents and bought four glossy music magazines.

Out came Pun-ch Lines! snappy slogans. Under the “Music” heading, we selected one which fitted perfectly. The blurb in the text mentioned opera, classical music, golden oldies and catchy little tunes.

“I want to sing using my new sound system because…”

“it would be a gold-en opera-tune-ity”

£2,000 worth of music equipment later, what did she do. Promptly gave up singing!

Daughters, who’d have ‘em!

A Spicy Encounter - Part 3 of 4 - Pungent Spices

Posted by admin in Victuals

Spices come from the buds, bark, stems, roots, berries and seeds of plants. Any part except for the leaf is termed a spice, the leaves are classified as herbs.

Spices are generally grouped into five categories based on flavor - sweet; tangy; pungent; hot and amalgamating. Today we will delve further into the pungent spices and discover there secrets.

Pungent spices are the ones which give a burst of flavor. They are relatively strong and as such only a small amount is needed. But don’t be fooled into thinking that such a small amount of ingredient must mean it is not important. The pungent spice is the secret to many a superb dish and often is the difference between OK and gourmet.

Caraway Seed

An ancient spice, known to be used as early as 3000BC. Caraway seeds were valued for their medicinal uses as well as culinary.

The seeds have a warm, earthy aroma with hints of aniseed, orange peel and fennel. Caraway seeds assist in balancing rich, fatty foods and thus is often used in cheese dishes. It is also a common ingredient in garam masala, used in Indian cuisine.

Cardamom

This is a very versatile spice and can be used in either sweet or savory dishes. Green pods are picked from a native Southern Indian tropical plant. The pods contain 10 to 20 tiny brown seeds. These seeds have a warm, flowery taste.

Cardamom is used in Indian curries, Middle-eastern dishes, rice dishes and desserts. Use ground cardamom or often a bruised cardamom pod is called for. The pod is slightly squashed which assists in releasing the flavor.

Celery Seed

The celery seed comes from and ancient European herb. It has a strong flavor that compliments well with tomatoes and vegetable juices. Celery seed will often find it’s way into a ‘Bloody Mary’.

Celery seed is often blended with other spices such as paprika, ginger, cinnamon and pepper to create spice blends for seafood, chicken and red meat.

Cloves

We have probably all used cloves at one time or another. But did you know they are a natural antiseptic and anesthetic.

Cloves are the dried flower buds of a tropical tree native to Maluku (previously Indonesian Spice Islands). They are crimson in color but have little flavor when first picked. Once dried they turn dark brown and eugenol, a pungent oil develops.

Cloves although native to Indonesia played a large role in the spice trade and are found in almost every cuisine the world over.

Cumin

Cumin is native to the Nile valley and has been found in the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs. It has also been used in England since the 13th century. The Spanish took cumin seeds to the Americas and it is an integral part of Mexican chili powder.

It has a pungent, earthy, curry-like flavor and used to produce full-bodied flavor curries. For the best results use gently roasted whole seeds or good quality dark, oily cumin powder. Try some in your pumpkin soup next time.

Fenugreek

This is one of those things I can never work out how to spell. Fenugreek seed comes from a clover looking plant and has been used medicinally since ancient times.

It has a distinct bitterness that adds distinct bite to hot curries such as vindaloo. Hard to believe but the seeds produce an extract that is used to make imitation maple syrup.

Galangal

From South-East Asia, galangal is similar to ginger but has a sharper aroma. It comes from the rhizome of the plant and is used in Thai cooking.

The pungent flavor helps to neutralize overly fishy flavors.

Ginger

Ginger comes from the rhizome (root) of the tropical ginger plant. The strength of flavor of the piece of ginger is determined by how old the rhizome was when picked. Young, tender rhizomes are almost sweet as opposed to older rhizomes which are more fibrous and have a strong flavor.

Find ginger used in many Indian and Asian dishes. It can be used in desserts and in savory dishes. Ginger is also good for upset stomachs.

Juniper

The juniper berry is a small blue-black berry with a unique pine aroma and astringency. It is best known as the flavor enhancer of gin.

Use dried juniper berries to reduce the strong flavor of game and the fattiness of duck. It is very strong and only a few berries is needed - 5 berries per 1 pound of meat. For a spectacular chicken casserole (red wine, sage, thyme, bay leaves), add a couple of juniper berries.

Lemon Myrtle

A native of Australia, it is the leaves that are used (a contradiction to the rule that leaves are herbs). They give a unique fresh lemony aroma and a flavor that is more like lemon zest.

Fantastic in Asian dishes especially with chicken, seafood and vegetables.

Nigella Seeds

I first discovered these about two years ago. They are strong, sharp tasting, little black seeds.

Nigella seeds work well with Indian cooking, potato and other carbohydrates.

Saffron

The most expense and precious spice in the world. Saffron threads are the dried stigmas of a purple, autumn, crocus flower. Each flower only produces 3 stigmas. It takes approximately 75,000 flowers to produce 1 pound of saffron. But because of it’s strong coloring power and intense flavor, only a small amount is required.

Saffron produces a bright orange-yellow color and an intense pungent flavor. It is best to buy good quality threads and not powder to ensure authenticity. Soak the threads in warm water for at least 15 minutes prior to use.

Star Anise

Star anise is a dried, star-shaped fruit harvested from a Chinese Magnolia tree. It has a warm, licorice flavor with under currents of cinnamon.

It is used in spice blends and found in Chinese cooking.

Wattleseed

Another native to Australia. It is seed collected from specific species of acacia. Ground wattleseed has a woody, nutty flavor with coffee overtones.

It can be used to flavor ice-cream, cake and cookies or used as a rub on white meats.

Well, there you have it, a brief introduction into the world of pungent spices, don’t let their strongness scare you off.

Winter Bedding Storage Tips

Posted by admin in Misc

With the winter finally behind us, it is time to put that winter bedding away for yet another year. While flannel sheets and heavy comforters are perfect for those cold winter nights, most of us look forward to sleeping under light cotton sheets and lightweight throws. With a little care and preparation, your winter bedding will be as fresh as a spring morning the next time you bring it out.

Be sure to give your winter bedding a proper cleaning before you put it away. While going to the laundromat is not the ideal way to spend an afternoon, it will save you loads of time when washing your winter bedding. Use one of the large-capacity washers to launder your blankets and comforters. If you have a good quality duvet, you may want to have it dry-cleaned to ensure that it is not damaged.

If you do decide to wash your duvet while you are at the laundromat, be sure to pay careful attention to the washing instructions. It would be an awful shame to ruin your expensive down duvet by ignoring the washing instructions. Contrary to popular ideas, a down duvet can be washed in a washing machine. Just be sure to use a mild detergent, and throw a couple of tennis balls in the dryer with it. This will help distribute the down as it is being dried.

Be sure to use a mild detergent to preserve and extend the life of your bedding. As you are most likely aware, white sheets ought to be laundered separately. To keep your whites as white as can be, be sure to use oxygenated bleach. Chlorine bleach can be extremely harsh, and it tends to leave a residue that can be damaging to the material.

Flannel bedding ought to be washed and dried separately from your other bedding. Flannel sheets tend to leave a lot of lint in the dryer, and it can cause a real mess if you mix them with your other bedding. In our experience, we have found that the best way to dry flannel sheets is to hang them outside to air dry. This will help keep your bedding in good shape and ensure that you can enjoy them for many winters to come.

Commercial Ponds

Posted by admin in House Of Gardening

Commercial ponds are ponds constructed primarily for farming fish for commercial purposes. Commercial ponds are mainly used for aquaculture, which is the cultivation of the natural produce of water, like fish or shellfish. The different species of fish farmed in commercial ponds are catfish, tilapia, crawfish, shrimp, trout, bass, and salmon, to name a few.

Aquaculture is not a recent phenomenon. Commercial ponds have been used for aquaculture as far back as pre-2000 BC when the Chinese, Japanese, Romans, Egyptians, and others commercial farmed in large ponds. Today, commercial production of both freshwater and saltwater fish is very common around the world. However, in the United States much of the fish consumed are caught from natural waters and not commercially farmed. The practice of commercial fish farming, though, is rapidly becoming more prevalent.

The key to the success of a commercial fish-farming exercise starts with the proper design and planning of the commercial pond. Commercial ponds should be properly designed and built on a ground with proper clay content and enough of a water supply to last for up to ten years. While constructing a pond for commercial purposes, the critical factors to be borne in mind are the construction costs, cost and ease of operation, and productivity. While water availability and soil characteristics are obvious candidates for attention during the planning and design of a commercial pond, other aspects like the topography of the land, pesticide residues in the land, drainage, chances of flooding, and classification of the land as wetlands are other equally important aspects that need to be considered.

Commercial ponds can be divided into three types: embankment or levee ponds, watershed ponds, and a hybrid between these two. Levee ponds, which are built on flat lands, are the most common. Watershed ponds are typically built in hilly areas. Hybrid ponds are constructed in areas with gently rolling topography. Small ponds of less than ten acres in area are commonly reported to be easier to manage than large ponds. Also, longer life expectancy has been observed in commercial ponds that are deeper.

Ponds provides detailed information on Ponds, Garden Ponds, Backyard Ponds, Commercial Ponds and more. Ponds is affiliated with Preformed Pond Liners.

How Salespeople Can Create Immediate Believability And Credibility

Posted by admin in Better Sales

It pays to be specific. I believe that statement is true. If it is true, why do so many salespeople pepper their sales presentations with phrases of generalities? There are two primary reasons. One is habit and the other is instinct.

So many people in and out of sales speak in generalities. It’s really hard to pin them down for the details. If speaking in generalities comes so naturally to so many people - it has to be instinctive. In sales it’s tempting to impress new and prospective customers. One of the ways salespeople do this is with their product and service presentations.

These presentations often include references to the following:

=> How many products are in your product line?
=> How many years your company has been in business?
=> How many customers you have worked with.
=> How much of your business is repeat business?
=> How much of a discount you’re planning to offer to get the business?
=> How much your product improves productivity?
=> How much your product reduces the cost of doing something?

When the time is right to begin talking about your products you’d be a fool not talk about these things. But for some inexplicable reason salespeople usually follow a similar path. Let’s review this list and see how salespeople tend to use all of the above during a sales presentation.

=> We have over 20,000 products in our product line.
=> Our Company has been in business more than 30 years.
=> Our customer database includes more than 30,000 customers.
=> Last year more than 50% of our business came from existing customers.
=> Because of the quantity you’re buying I’m delighted to offer you a 20% discount.
=> Our product will improve your department’s productivity at least 20%.
=> Our product will reduce the operating costs for this project by more than 10%.

Do you notice what all these statements have in common? All of the numbers cited end in a zero. Zeros seldom add credibility. In fact, they detract from it. Salespeople tend to feel more secure when they’re not pinned down by the specifics. Generalities make you feel good, but they don’t make you sound good.

It takes a great deal of self-discipline and determination to speak with any degree of specificity. Here’s an example that has repeated itself many times.Whenever I conduct an on-site sales training program (usually one-half day) I always provide the decision-maker, because he’s usually the one who introduces me, with a prepared introduction. It’s exactly what I want him to say and it also takes the pressure off him to improvise something at the last minute.

The last three lines of my introduction are:
– He has worked with 458 different organizations.
– Last year 68% of his business was repeat business.
– Jim Meisenheimer, Inc. has achieved 16 consecutive years of increased sales and profitability.

All the introducer has to do is read the introduction. Here’s how the last three lines are often delivered. He has worked with over 400 different organizations. Last year more than 60% of his business was repeat business.
Jim Meisenheimer, Inc. has increased sales every year he’s been in business.

Ironically, even with a written script the generalities come bubbling to the surface. Let’s try it one more time and see if you can sense the difference.

=> We have 21,973 products in our product line as of July 1st.
=> Our Company has been in business 33 years.
=> Our customer database includes 32,877 customers.
=> Last year 57.5% of our business came from existing customers.
=> Because of the quantity you’re buying I’m delighted to offer you a savings of $785.34.
=> Our product improved ABC Customer’s productivity by 23.6%.
=> Our product reduced the operating costs for XYZ by 12.7%.

Okay, let’s wrap it up. Think about these five questions.

1. Do you want to get someone’s attention?
2. Do you want to create the impression that you’ve done your homework?
3. Do you want to build credibility throughout your sales presentation?
4. Do you want to differentiate yourself from your competition?
5. Do you want to increase your sales?

You can do all of these things and more if you trade-in your generalities for more specifics. Specifics are more credible and believable than generalities.

Simply stated, you’ll become more believable and credible as soon as you become more specific.
