O2 Contract Silent about Rates for Exceeding Download Limits When Abroad
O2, the mobile broadband service provider has been accused of charging excessive rates when users exceed their download limits. O2 has defended this policy by stating that the aim is to prevent users from crossing the download limits.
This charge levied by O2 for crossing download limits is far more than that charged by any other service provider in the country. The present rates are £200.70 per GB for the excess data (click for unlimited mobile broadband info).
The explanation given by O2 for this high rate is that this charge is expected to act as a disincentive for the users who download beyond the limit so that the rest of the users do not face any problem in their network. The problem is that a number of users do not know the exact limits and end up crossing them unintentionally. Regarding this, the spokesperson of O2 justified the company’s policy by stating that only a small number of users cross the cap. The company informs the users when half of their limit has been used and then when nine-tenth of the allowed data usage has been crossed. The company thus ensures that its consumers know about their usage and the penalty policy.
Obliviously, the charges are more for consumers who exceed the data limit while using the connection abroad as they are also charged the roaming rates. The problem here is that the contract of O2 is silent about the exact fees and merely states that the rates for exceeding the limit could be high.
