Mobile Broadband Technology Cheaper Option for Small Businesses

A report by Analysys Mason, the reputed telecoms analysts, states that it is possible for small businesses to save money by using mobile broadband technology. The report also says that apart from being cheaper than a Wi-Fi hotspot, there are many other advantages of using mobile broadband technology.

The cost of using mobile broadband services is less than 10 pounds a month and many service providers offer business mobile broadband packages. These packages also feature larger download limits and have better technical and customer support. Many packages though targeted towards individual consumers are also suitable for businesses (see mobile broadband with free laptop deals). BT in fact offers free mobile broadband for companies using its sub 30 pounds per month business broadband packages. These, among others were the key points that were highlighted in the report aimed at educating readers on the benefits of mobile broadband technology

The report states that small businesses could end up saving over two thousand pounds every year by choosing to use mobile broadband instead of Wi-Fi hotspots. This is primarily because a WiFi connection can cost as much as £700 per employee per year when all the associated costs are considered.

Steve Hilton, who is a Principle Analyst at Analysys Mason, commented that small businesses forget that though the technology expense seems negligible when considered individually it actually amounts to a lot when you have many employees. By taking advantage of simple solutions like mobile broadband, small businesses can reduce operating costs significantly.

GPS - How It Works

In this second of a three part series we’re going to go over how GPS receivers actually measure distance. A lot of math and science goes into this stuff so sit back and get ready to strain your brain.

At any given time, let’s choose midnight for this example, the satellite begins transmitting a digital pattern called a pseudo-random code. At that same time the GPS receiver begins running that same random pattern. When the satellite’s signal reaches the receiver the pattern transmission will lag a little behind the receivers playing of the same pattern. The length of the delay is equal to the travel time of the signal. The receiver multiplies this time by the speed of light to measure how far the signal actually travelled. We assume the signal travelled in a straight line and this therefore is the distance from receiver to satellite.

In order for this measurement to be able to be made the receiver and the satellite both need clocks that can be synchronized to the nanosecond. In order to make this possible you need atomic clocks, not only in the receiver but in every satellite as well. Atomic clocks cost between $50,000 and $100,000. That makes them a little too expensive for everyday use.

To overcome this cost problem the GPS system has a very clever solution. Every satellite contains an expensive atomic clock but the receiver contains a regular quartz clock which the receiver itself constantly resets. The receiver looks at the incoming signals from four or more of the satellites and compensates for it’s own inaccuracy. Once it calculates the correct time value this will cause all the signals that the receiver is getting from the satellites to align at a single point in space. That is the time value held by the atomic clocks in the satellites themselves. So the receiver sets it’s clock to that time value and therefore has the same time value as all the satellites. Atomic clock accuracy for quartz clock prices. You can’t beat that.

When you measure the distance to four satellites you can draw four spheres that all intersect at one point. Three spheres will intersect even if you’re way off but four spheres will only intersect if you are exactly right. The receiver can calculate the time needed for the spheres to intersect at one point. Based on this it resets it’s clock to match the atomic clocks of the satellites. The receiver does this constantly as long as it is on, which gives it the same accuracy as the atomic clocks in the satellites.

In order for this info to be of any use, the receiver also has to know where the satellites actually are. To do this, the receiver stores an almanac that tells where each satellite is at a given time. Any adjustments that need to be made because of gravitational pull are transmitted to the receivers by the department of the military.

In the last instalment of this series we’ll go over problems with the system, how they can be compensated for and how to use the data itself.

Pandemic May Slow Down Broadband Speeds

The UK network struggles to keep up with bandwidth demand as the flu season spells trouble for those reliant on their home broadband.

Analysts Gartner and the Centre for Disease Control believe that owing to the pandemic, 40 percent of the workforce will not be able to reach their workplace for an extended period of time. It implies that there will be an increase in broadband demand, as the workers will be working from home, and local networks will find difficulty coping with heavy traffic.

Children will mostly stay at home during the flu season and so will their working parents, with the result that both children and parents will be using the internet more often during daytime, resulting in greater demand for bandwidth.

Though employers have distributed special software to help with bandwidth and latency issues, Gartner has suggested increased usage of 3G, WiMAX or satellite connections to curb the speed problems caused by a pandemic (click for dongle information).

Roberta Witty, research vice president at Gartner, stated that a variety of strategies for WAH including pandemic and WAH impact planning in close coordination with ISPs need to be set up by the organizations. The business operations requiring heavy internet usage should be identified in advance and hours of operations should be broken up so that the required bandwidth can be obtained.

O2 Contract Silent about Rates for Exceeding Download Limits When Abroad

O2, the mobile broadband service provider has been accused of charging excessive rates when users exceed their download limits. O2 has defended this policy by stating that the aim is to prevent users from crossing the download limits.

This charge levied by O2 for crossing download limits is far more than that charged by any other service provider in the country. The present rates are £200.70 per GB for the excess data (click for unlimited mobile broadband info).

The explanation given by O2 for this high rate is that this charge is expected to act as a disincentive for the users who download beyond the limit so that the rest of the users do not face any problem in their network. The problem is that a number of users do not know the exact limits and end up crossing them unintentionally. Regarding this, the spokesperson of O2 justified the company’s policy by stating that only a small number of users cross the cap. The company informs the users when half of their limit has been used and then when nine-tenth of the allowed data usage has been crossed. The company thus ensures that its consumers know about their usage and the penalty policy.

Obliviously, the charges are more for consumers who exceed the data limit while using the connection abroad as they are also charged the roaming rates. The problem here is that the contract of O2 is silent about the exact fees and merely states that the rates for exceeding the limit could be high.

Check out Uverse TV and Internet

My wife and I have tested out ATTs Uverse for roughly a month. Although ATT boasts about the number of high def channels it makes available, I am like the majority of television enjoyers who not only do not have a high definition TV, but also still use old fashioned analog formats. We only hooked the U-verse to the set in our family room. But the firms bundles will let you hook up to 3 plus more if you are willing to pay more. The DVR attaches to one TV, and the others can retrieve recorded shows off it. I got the U400 service option, which comes with about 300 non-HD channels and starts at $99 a month. ATT has packed choices that mix U-verse and Net access, but do not start getting excited at the idea of unbelievably fst Web surfing. The online access packaged with Uverse is relatively the same as ATT’s base package, though upload rates are faster.

ATT installations take 2 to 4 hours, depending on 2 to 4 your home should be fitted to accommodate U-verse. In our case, technicians had to change the wiring in the back of some of the telephone jacks. Because I have been using analog wire, I’d not yet attempted a Video on Demand movie, which U-verse includes. This allows you to select from movies and shows from a variety of the premiere networks, including Showtime, and play them on your Television like a DVD player.

Looking for A Reason to Swap your Old PBX For a VOIP Hosted PBX - How About Eight Great Reasons!

1.Lower CAPEX Costs: Buying a traditional phone system is like
buying a new car, it significantly depreciates the day you place it in
service. Plus, you own a piece of equipment that you’ll have to one day
replace. You can put that money to better use by spending less up-front by
intstalling a VoIP Hosted PBX system.

2.A VoIP Hosted PBX is Dynamically Scalable: Up-size and Down-size
on the fly. VoIP Hosted PBX Service lets you buy the exact number of
users you need right now - later you can add users when you actually need
them. This helps preserve capital in comparison to guessing what size
PBX system you need to buy today to support the number of users you
think you’ll have in 3 - 5 years.

3.A VoIP PBX Significantly Reduces Depreciation Losses: Traditional
PBX systems depreciate almost 70% the day you take them out of their
box. With a VoIP Hosted phone service, you won’t have to worry about
depreciation since you’re not purchasing equipment.

4.A VoIp Hosted PBX is
Cheaper, Easier to Maintain and Update: Moves, Add’s and Changes no longer
require on-site changes to your phone system. Most VoIP Hosted PBXs can
be remotely configured by the vendor, thus the flexibility to add,
change, delete or move users within hours. Your expenses will be reduced by
eliminating costly monthly maintenance contracts or the high labor cost
required to have a tech onsite for every change you need.

5.A VoIP Hosted PBX Uses Non-Proprietary Components: When you buy a
traditional PBX phone system, you’re locking your company into a long
term commitment to a proprietary architecture that may or may not keep pace with technological changes. Bottom line, you are betting your
company’s future that the proprietary technology will remain compatible with evolving
industry standards.

In the future, there’s a good chance with a
traditional PBX you’ll be at the manufacturer’s mercy for repair and expansion
since only their parts will work with your purchase. Make sure your
VoIP Hosted PBX system works with multiple phone manufacturers. So if you
decide to move to a different system, a forklift upgrade won’t be
necessary.

6.A VoIP System Eliminates Technology Obsolescence: Since you’re
not purchasing a phone system, you don’t have to worry about the
equipment becoming obsolete. Updates and new features are automatically
available to you with REIGN-FREE Hosted PBX service.

7.Disaster Recovery/ Emergency Protection: A hosted PBX product
will protect your company’s calling infrastructure the same way you
protect your website and email - with specialized, secure off-site hosting.
Make sure if you are considering a VoIP hosted PBX that the vendor
provide security and redundancy so you don’t have to worry about the
physical requirements and support of your phone system.

8.Improved Features for Improved Productivity: Most enterprise VoIP
Hosted Voice service providers include advanced calling features that
are not available with traditional phone systems. Features that will
improve the way you control your calling, like Visual Voicemail, Unique
DID’s, Find-Me/Follow-Me, Click-to-Call and Outlook Integration.
