The Beginner’s Guide to Text Based Mmorpg Games
Understanding text based mmorpg games and why are they so damn good?
Many years ago, before computers had graphical capabilities, text based rpg games were being run on college LANs over super weak dial-up connections. Best known as multi user dungeons (MUDs), many of these text based games have been modified for play over the web via a MUD client, or more recently, a modern web browser.
Most text based rpg games have very few graphics. Like original RPGs, played with pencil, paper and dice, they rely on random statistics, numbers and written words. The game can be played over a poor internet connection, and they can handle large numbers of concurrent player, often known as Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG ). Unlike graphical games, text based web games will run on computers with a much lower spec, enabling them to be played on pretty much any PC connected to the web. Gamers are even playing them on handheld devices and wap enabled mobile cell phones.
Every text-based browser game worth its salt will have the power to create a character, increase their health, wealth, status, equipment, weaponary, trade items etc, and complete tasks in the game. With a huge influx of new browser games popping-up over the past 4 years, competition is stiff, players expectations are much higher and building a successful text-based RPG involves time, effort and constant feature updates. Great text browser games are massively addictive and retain loyal players for many months or years.
Facebook observed the attraction in text based web games and has recently launched Farmville, Mafia Wars and Frontierville, developed by Zynga.
Although more commercialised and graphical than traditional text based web games, the game play is really no different to the majority of other text based MMORPGs.
Take a look at Torn, Mafia Wars, Frontierville or many others, if you fancy giving text based mmorpg games a try.
