In the not so distant past, friends and colleagues would meet each other over a weekly poker table. No one was very good at the game, but the charm lied in the camaraderie and a chance to get away from the wives for a night. We have lost this kind of home game with online poker and big business casinos. The lingering nostalgia for cigar smoke and a folding table, however, reveals an even deeper issue for the poker world: we have lost the average man.
There are no longer players who pick up the cards for a casual game among friends. Now we have sharks and fish, donkeys and ox, and a whole assortment of other animal themed nicknames. Everyone is expected to either be a pro, or actively working towards pro status. As a new player, you are expected to study strategy and playing guides before you even get to the table. You would be laughed out of the casino if you sat down at the felt and asked your buddy next to you to explain the game.
Personally, I resent the gradual eradication of the Average Man poker online player. I think that there was a certain charm to taking poker as a game that is lost when you see it as a money making business. The loss of the Average Man shows more than anything that poker today is not the same game that I grew up on.

The short stack is James Akenhead of London, England, who has 6,800,000 in chips. He finished as a runner-up in one of the $1,500 events last year, and has gained a reputation for aggressive play as a member of the “Hit Squad” - a group of young English poker online professionals.

It is okay to think about a hand you lost to see where you made a mistake, but then let it go and move on to the next hand or poker game. It is the same with winning. Everyone gets lucky sometimes, so don’t let a lucky catch make you think you’re invincible. Poker is mind game played against other people. In tournament and cash game poker, it is always important to have a well sized chip stack in comparison to your opponents.
Many kinds of poker tournaments will advertise poker tournaments where an ‘add on’ is offered to players who opt to do so before a schedule time limit in the event. The ‘add on’ is usually a set price at which any player can purchase an additional set of chips to add to his tournament chip stick. Usually these chips are offered at a price that make the amount of chips you get per dollar greater than the price of the chip your bought in for, thus making the usefulness of ‘add ons’ seem almost mandatory to most tournament players. If everyone else does the add on, and you do not, you are at a clear disadvantage, especially when the add on is significantly sized.
In cash games, an ‘add on’ refers to new chips bought by a player to increase his cash game chip stack before he has busted out. Players will do this so that they have the most money behind them in a given hand, as opposed to trying to push their short stack to victory. Once a player goes broke, the purchase of new chips is called a ‘rebuy’ rather than an ‘add on,’ for obvious reasons.
