States addicted to gambling From the outset of legalizing gambling in various states in the US there were predictions that it would result in more people spending money they didn’t have addicted to the slot machines and video online poker screens. This turns out to be quite true, only it’s not the people who are addicted. It’s the states. Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey, are the newest three to get a taste of the poker and gambling and gambling revenue, and it turns out they like the increase in the budget these games are causing. Atlantic City is in a downward spiral, but the very conservative governor of New Jersey is lobbying for a state take over of the Everest casino businesses there. Despite revenue being down 30% from 2006, the state isn’t wanting to let the boon bringers go belly up. Now New York is entertaining talks of building not one, but two new mega casinos around the Long Island area, even though the market is saturated as it is. It all really speaks volumes about the current economic climate and the use of available resources. Despite the casino’s poor showings the past two years in terms of revenue for the states, they’re still willing to take a gamble on the gamblers in hopes of balancing the deficit budgets these states are going through. I don’t suspect it will be long before the whole 50 end up legalizing some form of gambling for revenue purposes. It’s what we online poker advocates have been saying all along. With some regulation, countries can take the online markets and make all parties happy. Customers will feel safer with some oversight from a regulatory agency; Casinos will see a spike in traffic from the new customers attracted; and the players won’t have to worry about shady operations from some of the lesser caliber site owners that try to scam the system. Win. Win. Win.

Gambling Money Should Be Fun Money One of my pet peeves is when people funnel money from other areas of their budget into their poker fund. I am sure you have seen this happen to someone you know. Sometimes you can even hear them say things like “I guess I can spend a little less on groceries this month” or things in the same vein. Things like this make it crystal clear to anyone in listening range that this unfortunate fellow will betting money at the table that was allotted to other things. These kinds of statements make it very clear that this unfortunate person does not realize that gambling money should be fun money. poker should be spare money, or fun money, that will not affect your financial bottom line in another area. The very beauty of online poker is the fact that it is unpredictable. This makes it fun, but hard to budget for. If you find that you are dipping into other areas of your life, then you need to seriously reconsider your bankroll. Try going down a stake or two so that you can afford your poker habit using only extra money. If necessary, you can even switch to free rolls for a while. Whatever you do, just don’t use the household budget for the poker table.

I’ve managed to throw away some pretty sizable online poker bank rolls in my day. One of the plights of the poker online system is that your whole stack is often right there in your account (especially if you are hoarding your whole stack in one spot), making it really easy to buy in over and over again. This is good when you are playing multi-table poker and playing well, but in the grips of a nasty bout of tilting, you can leak weeks or months of hard work in, well, hours.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as a result of steaming off literally thousands in a matter of hours, thousands that I worked over many, many sessions to build and then gave away in a blind fury over a series of bad beats and then bad behavior, is knowing when to realize that sometimes you just aren’t in your right head.
No matter how badly you want to play and win back what you just lost, reloading too many times in the wrong spirit is essentially throwing money out the window. Even if you aren’t over the deep end, realizing that you aren’t on your best game, and then getting up and coming after you’ve put some distance between you and the tilt, is pretty much like cutting yourself a pay check: never chase tilt with further tilt. Walk away, and come back with those remaining chips waiting for you to rebuild.

Last week I totally screwed myself early on in a home game poker tournament. I had been sitting back in the beginning of the tournament, building my image as a tight poker player and prepping my opponents for some bluffing later in the game, and I was doing a pretty good job of it. I was placing some feeler bets and winning pots, so I was getting confident, when I accidentally bluffed the wrong guy-one of the players in a pot that I tried to buy was a total calling station, and he re-raised me, which forced me to fold my cards. I lost my chips, but more importantly, the image that I’d been trying to established was totally gone. Seeing me fold after I bet informed everyone else at the table that I wasn’t afraid to steal a pot with a bad hand, and they were wise to my strategy for the rest of the game. With my strategy sunk, I couldn’t buy up hands as readily, and I came upon a dry streak of cards that pretty much crippled my stack.
If you are trying to establish a table image, don’t let on too early in the game, or it could end your night pretty early. Practice by playing poker online before making these mistakes at the live table.

They say that calling is one of the weakest things to do in poker. And while an aggressive style will usually want to use a more aggressive move as often as possible (raising), sometimes you’ll find yourself in situations where simply calling is the best move you can make.
We’ll start with an example. You’re in middle position at a 1/2 table with pocket 8s. You make the standard raise of 4 big blinds to 8 dollars. A loose player in the big blind reraises you 3x your bet to 24 dollars.
There are two courses of action you can take here. You could reraise, but if you get reraised then you’re probably not too happy with your pocket 8s at that point. On the other hand, you could just call and take a flop.
With marginal pocket pairs like 9s-5s I prefer to call to a reraise the majority of the time, simply because 1) your hand isn’t THAT strong to begin with, 2) those kinds of hands can’t stand a reraise, and 3) calling gives you more value in the even that you do flop a set.
So what happened this hand? Well you just called and the flop came A-3-8 rainbow. This is an excellent flop for you. If your online poker opponent has a higher pocket pair he didn’t hit a higher set on you and if he’s holding pocket aces, well there’s just not much you can do other than try to get to showdown as cheaply as possible.
However, the majority of the time you’re opponent will be sitting on a high A-x hand such as AK, AQs or AJs. And this is great for you. But how do you extract the most money from your set?
Well if you can put your opponent on a high pocket pair, then you simply check and call. He’ll keep trying to bet you off the pot especially if you’re showing “weakness” by calling. As long as the board doesn’t coordinate on the turn or river you should be golden.
There are only two things you should really be worried about the majority of the time. The board paring two aces and another card pairing. That would give your poker online opponent a higher full house. But if the board isn’t paired and is fairly low and two aces happen to pop up, then get ready to ride the train right to value town.
