New York Motels Offer Unique Style

Posted by admin in Pastime

Quaint and quirky with an array of artistic themes, New York boutique motels have become quite popular. Dripping with luxury, these motels usually offer more personalized accomodations than larger, chain hotels. The motel rooms are furnished based on a certain theme and offer anywhere between three and 50 rooms to accommodate large parties.

These botique motels are growing in popularity, not only in New York, but around the world, especially the United Kingdom. Often housed in refurbished buildings, the first boutique hotel in New York was considered to be Morgans Hotel in Murray Hill. Another one of the first in the country was the Village Court, located on the West Coast in San Francisco. While some botique motels can be traditional and comforable, many are decked out with bright colors and pop culture references. An intimate setting is the goal of the boutique motel, with staff members even committing guests names to memory. Most offer 24-hour guest service as well. In an effor to distinguish themselves, boutique motels focus on three areas: design, service and a target market. The target audience is usually between 25-55 years of age and reside in the mid to upper income level. Several boutique motels rely on repeat customers as the base for their business, counting on their service to bring people back. Like a larger hotel-chain, boutique hotels offer restaurants, but they are usually smaller and quaint with gourmet food choices, and reputable bars or lounges that are open to the public.

Many even offer the same amenities of a bed and breakfast. These boutique motels differ greatly in amenities, with some offering the latest in technology and others offering no technology at all. You’ll be able to find a boutique motel to fit your needs, no matter what type of atmosphere and style you’re looking for.

The Euromillions Lottery and Something You Might Not Recognise. How it Works, Who it Applies to and How You May You Encounter this Whopping European Lotto

Posted by admin in Better Bets, Gambling Luck, Pastime

The Euro lotto was originally founded by the national lotteries of France, Spain and the United Kingdom and was unveiled in February 2004. The 1st lottery draw was on Feb 13th 04 in Paris. The France, Spain and the UK were the only nations partaking in the beginning but lotteries from Luxembourg, Portugal, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and Ireland also got engaged in Oct 2004.

The EURO MILLIONS lotto or the Euro lotto, as it’s ordinarily acknowledged, pools the lotto ticket receipts of the nine partaking Euro countries showing a mammoth Euro Lotto jackpot. With the sum of nations joining the EU on the increase, this will without a doubt lead to more states partaking in the Euro Millions lottery. An increase in the amount of individuals partaking in the Euro Lottery will lead to a lasting growth of the already massive European Lottery “jackpots”.

Q. How To Play The Euro Millions Lottery?

Each and every participant must select five primary numbers from 1 to 50 and 2 Lucky-star numbers from 1 to 9. During the draw, 5 primary plus two lucky-star numbers are then chosen at random from 2 lottery draw machines containing numbered balls.

Euromillions Winnings

The probabilities of scooping up the Euro Lottery “jackpot” is a distant 1 in seventy six million but the chances of acquiring a money prize is a fairly decent 1 in 24. If the jackpot is not won in a given week, it is carried forward to the following lottery draw that will result in an ever increasing jackpot prize. New rules added on the 09-Feb-07 restrict the amount of consecutive rollovers to 11, with the “jackpot” rolling down to lower prize levels succeeding the eleventh lottery draw when the prize is not collected.

The new regulations also initiated European Super Draw which go on twice yearly and offer “jackpots” in the region of £100 million. The difference with Super-Draws is that the “jackpot” has to be won during the calendar week of the lottery draw; this means, if there is no ticket matching, all the drawn numbers then the top prize will then be distributed to the lottery ticket bearer(s) on the succeeding winning prize tier.

The Art Of Magic

Posted by admin in Pastime

What comes in to your mind when you hear the word “magic”? What
is magic? What is the ART of magic? According to World Book
Online Encyclopedia, “The word magic also refers to
entertainment in which the performer does tricks of so-called
magic. In such entertainment, neither the magicians nor the
audience believes that the performer has supernatural powers.”

On the other hand, Paul Harris who is the author of “The Art of
Astonishment” defines magicians as “guides to astonishment”.
Thus, magic can be defined as “an application of guided
astonishment.” The three main branches of magic are “stage
magic”, “parlor magic” and “close-up magic”. Stage magic is any
magic that can be done on a stage. Stage magic is used to depict
the imagination. On the other hand, there’s also “stand-up”
magic. If you’ve ever seen the Amazing Johnathan or Paul Kozak
perform, you’ve been witness to stand-up magic.

Magic can be categorized by the motivations and the performance
styles, but it does not end there. Here are some of the types of
magic according to motivation:

Parlor magic is performed right on the same floor level as the
audience, as opposed to a raised stage. Gospel is a special type
of parlor magic that is used to demonstrate religious (mostly
Christian) concepts. With the replacement of intimate nightclubs
by super-mega-nightclubs and comedy clubs, classic parlor magic
is rarely seen today. A distinctive branch of magic has
developed quite recently, called “close-up”. Close-up magic,
like the other styles of magic, has developed its own individual
genres. Other types of close-up magic are “table-hopping”,
“walk-around” and “street magic”. All these magic happens in the
magician’s and/or spectator’s hands. This form of magic has
become increasingly popular due to its intimate nature.

After discussing the various ways and motivations of magic, it
seems appropriate to talk about the various types of “magic”.
Eugene Burger, who co-authored the entitled “Magic and Meaning”,
he mentioned the divisions of magic. First, there is the
“primary magic” which is the imagination.

Secondary magic, on the other hand, is drawn out of the
imagination and into the physical world. These include “ritual”
magic and “stage” magic. Ritual magic is directed to enhance
some aspect of life. A good example of this is magic performed
by an Indian shaman (i.e. the rain dance around a campfire).
Unlike stage magic, ritual magic relies on the imagination
itself.

Other types of magic are:

Detached magic, which is a form of ritual magic, wherein the
symbols used do not have direct significance to the individual
invoking the magic. Reflexive or trickster magic uses deception.
This differs from reduced deceptive magic as it focuses on
reminding and telling audiences its deceptive nature. Such
include gambling displays and “sucker tricks.

Film Directors - Direct the Money Before the Money Directs You

Posted by admin in Pastime

(Copyright 2005)

Most Film Directors have elected to stay away from film budgets
and production costs. The heavy grinding SHOULD be left to
accountants - but, let’s lay it on the table:

The Film Director is at the helm of a big money-burning machine.
It is the Film Director’s job to produce his/her vision of the
script - on time and on budget. At his service is a team of film
production experts (the Line Producer, Unit Production Manager,
the AD team, Production Accountant, etc.) all there to assist
the Film Director to do just that.

Film Directors make it their business to understand the basic
functions of on-set filmmaking, without being able to fully
light a set, or operate a crane, or focus a steadicam. In the
same spirit, the Film Director must understand the basics of
Budgeting and the extremely important Weekly Cost Reporting
process. Every creative decision involves money. It’s only good
sense to learn to translate creative ideas into costs.

Experienced Directors know of The Weekly Cost Report. If you’re
not yet familiar with it, let me introduce it to you:

The Weekly Cost Report informs all Producers, Studio Executives
and Financiers of the costs you’re expending and how those costs
compare to the Approved Budget. If you are unable to challenge,
or defend, the conclusions made by those who read that financial
‘Report Card’ (that is, those who hold the purse strings) your
ability to control your career is significantly weakened.

Find a comfort level where you can, at the very least, know what
to ask during the Budgeting phase, and have a good understanding
of how you can trade-off one cost overrun with a cost savings in
another area. Know how to formulate general concepts of trading
off costs to arrive at your vision and you’ll impress the money
belts off the Studio Executives.

Picture the following scenario: You’re the Film Director of an
Independent Film Production. You’ve shot the exteriors called
for in the script and you’ve seen the dailies; however, you KNOW
that there’s a better shot of that exterior in Oklahoma that
would give the perfect hook to the opening of your film.

You know that you can convince the producers of this on a
creative plane. But, you also know that most producers will
shudder at the task of dropping that bombshell on the
Financiers/Bonding Company that you need to dip into the closely
guarded Contingency funds. (Oh, did I tell you that we’re going
to Okl…)

1. How do you pose solutions to those added costs?

2. What’s the right way to approach the game of cost trade-offs?

3. How do you defend those cost trade-offs?

It’s always going to be a challenge to present this kind of
choice - but, a very doable challenge if you know how to
translate your needs to cost trade-off’s by using my Walk The
Talk ideas.

Usual Way: As the Film Director you sincerely express your view
that the Oklahoma shot would be a perfect opening for the movie.
What kind of response do you think you’ll get? Here’s the most
likely, from my experience:

Film Producer/Bonding Company Rep - This will put us over-budget
by $150,000. I’ll talk to the… ‘whoever’ - (it’s a stall for
sure).

Walk The Talk Way Alternative: Film Director - The cost of
shooting 1 day of exteriors will not require a full crew in
Oklahoma. I’ve called the Film Commission there (see my web site
for internet links to all Film Commissions and major Unions) and
they have assured me that there are plenty of local crew
available to work at a very decent rate. - I estimate it should
cost about 1/2 of your estimate, say about $75,000 to give us a
bit more than we absolutely need. I can get that back over the
next 5 days here in New York. (Note: you’ll need to pick-up a
copy of my Ebook to see how I arrived at the $75,000 figure -
see Figure 17.2, Table 3) - You see, I’ve rehearsed the next
five days with my very experienced cast and there’s no way that
we can’t complete the scenes scheduled in 10 hours a day instead
of the budgeted 13 hours a day. And, as you all know, that last
2 hours in New York costs about $10,000 a day (see Figure 15.1
in my book).

Alternative: Bonding Company Representative - Oh. Have the
accountant make a schedule of the costs and we can check them.
(That’s a Financier’s last stand - it’s up to the accountant to
verify your estimates.)

You get the drift. You are simply applying a cost trade-off
technique in the same technical way as you would use focal
points, storyboards, crane shots, etc. You are ‘Directing The
Money’; the money isn’t Directing you.

Some Directors, through the school-of-hard-knocks, have
developed a ‘knack’ for conceptually streaming their creative
ideas through a ‘what’s the cost?’ process. But that process is
all too often tainted with blame on ‘the blue suits’ and ‘the
money guys’ and ‘all they’re interested in is the money’, etc.
It’s also often based on misinformation, biased toward a
predetermined decision. Take my word for it; unless you, as the
Film Director, can be familiar enough with the language of money
in film production, you’re up the proverbial creek.

You, as the Film Director, are at the helm of a money burning
machine. The best way to get the confidence of those who hold
the purse strings is to know how to participate in the budget
approval process, and then to trade off costs to get YOUR vision
during the shoot. You could think of it as Directing, only
you’re Directing The Money.

Reports and the trading-off of costs techniques? Visit my web

A Book of Verses Poem from The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

Posted by admin in Pastime

A Book of Verses underneath the Bough,

A Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread–and Thou

Beside me singing in the Wilderness–

Oh, Wilderness were Paradise enow!

The quatrain above comes from Edward Fitzgerald’s second edition
of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, 1868. Fitzgerald’s
treatments of Omar Khayyam’s poems brought the Persian poet to
the attention of the western world more than 700 years after the
poems were written.

Omar Khayyam

Omar Khayyam (1048-1123) was born in Nishapur, the capital city
of Khurasan, Persia, now Iran. He was born Ghiyath al-Din Abul
Fateh Omar Ibn Ibrahim al-Khayyam. Little is know of his early
life but the name Khayyam means “tentmaker” and signifies that
either Omar or his father Ibrahim may have practiced that trade.

Omar was educated locally and completed a treatise on algebra as
a youth. He came to the attention of Sultan Malik Shah who
offered Omar presence in the royal court. The Vizier Nizam
al-Mulk gave Omar a pension which enabled him to devote himself
to research in his favorite subjects of mathematics and
astronomy. He was commissioned to build an observatory in
Isfahan, and he was later assigned with eight other scholars to
revise the Muslim calendar. Omar published several books on
astronomy and algebra which rivaled the studies of contemporary
Europeans.

Though noted as a mathematician and astronomer, Omar wrote poems
throughout his life. His preferred style was to write four line
quatrains, and it is thought that he wrote about one thousand of
them during his life. Not all of the manuscripts survived but
about 600 poems have been attributed to him, though most critics
agree that not all of those were written by Omar Khayyam.

The word rubaiyat is a plural noun referring to the four
line quatrains that Omar wrote. Each quatrain can correctly be
called a rubai. In modern convention rubaiyat now refers
to a four line poem with a rhyme scheme of aaba where
each line expresses a complete thought.

The major themes in Omar’s rubaiyat are the mortality of the
human spirit and the fragile nature of human existence. The tone
of his poems is often pessimistic. Omar writes vividly about the
impossibility of understanding the universe. As a counterpoint
he also writes about the wisdom of living in the moment, sharing
friendship, and the conviviality of enjoying wine in the tavern.

Not surprisingly, Omar’s poems were viewed with suspicion by
orthodox Muslims. Since wine and drunkenness were prohibited by
Islamic law, effort was made to interpret his poems about wine
metaphorically, as in spiritual or romantic intoxication.

Omar said to a student near the end of his life, “My tomb shall
be in a spot where the north wind may scatter roses over it.”
Omar Khayyam died in Nishapur in 1131. According to the
biography by Ali ibn Azidu’l-Baihaqi, Omar called his family to
hear his last wishes and said, “Oh Lord, I have known You
according to the sum of my ability. Pardon me since verily my
knowledge is my recommendation to You.”

Edward Fitzgerald’s Treatment

The world knew very little about Omar Khayyam’s poetry until
Edward Fitzgerald’s second edition of The Rubaiyat of Omar
Khayyam
in 1868. The first edition of 250 copies was
published in 1859 anonymously and unnoticed. However the 1868
edition was surprisingly well received. The edition treated 101
of Omar Khayyam’s quatrains as one long poem. Many critics
believed that it was an English poem with Persian allusions.

Fitzgerald did not translate Omar’s poems literally. He freely
reinterpreted them and even combined some of the poems to make a
whole new poem. However his translation was inspired and
skillful, faithful to the soul of Omar Khayyam’s poems if not to
his words.

In fact, Fitzgerald spoke of his work not as a translation but
as a transmogrification. Fortunately, Fitzgerald’s work
is so good that few in the western world mind the fact that some
of the work is Fitzgerald’s own creation.

Fitzgerald created quatrains with iambic pentameter. That is,
the meter of each line contains five feet, and each foot is
iambic with an unaccented syllable followed by an accented
syllable. The rhyme pattern for the four lines is aaba.

Notice the last line of “A Loaf of Bread Underneath the Bough”
where Fitzgerald chose the word enow in order to produce
the final iambic foot.

Other Translations

There are numerous sources to view and read Omar Khayyam’s
Rubaiyat in the original Farsi language.

The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam has been translated into
many languages worldwide. Many English translations have
followed Fitzgerald’s. For interest and the sake of comparison,
here are a few additional translations of the “A Book of Verses
underneath the Bough” quatrain.

>From the first edition by Fitzgerald, still in iambic pentameter:

Here with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough,

A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse - and Thou

Beside me singing in the Wilderness -

And Wilderness is Paradise enow.

>From the 1882 edition by Edward Henry Whinfield:

In the sweet spring a grassy bank I sought

And thither wine and a fair Houri brought;

And, though the people called me graceless dog,

Gave not to Paradise another thought!

>From the 1888 translation by John Leslie Garner:

Yes, Loved One, when the Laughing Spring is blowing,

With Thee beside me and the Cup o’erflowing,

I pass the day upon this Waving Meadow,

And dream the while, no thought on Heaven bestowing.

>From the 1898 prose translation by Edward Heron-Allen:

I desire a little ruby wine and a book of verses,

Just enough to keep me alive, and half a loaf is needful;

And then, that I and thou should sit in a desolate place

Is better than the kingdom of a sultan.

Lastly, just for fun, here is Wendy Cope’s transcription of the
struggling South London amateur poet, a character she created,
Jason Strugnell’s translation:

Here with a Bag of Crisps beneath the Bough,

A Can of Beer, a Radio - and Thou

Beside me half asleep in Brockwell Park

And Brockwell Park is Paradise enow.

At least he got the enow part right.

ANOTHER “SPECIAL” PLACE TO LEAVE FOREVER

Posted by admin in Pastime

The interactions that build one’s mind occur somewhere between what we see as macro and micro universe. The elucidation of this “special” place will essentially improve the understanding of nature. The theory of interaction shows that life is a cosmic interaction, which occurs at atomic scales. Therefore the understanding of the universe is the key for the long sought ultimate knowledge - the truth that will make us free.

The modern picture of the universe is based on two irreconcilable theories - relativity and quantum mechanics, each describing the workings of nature, respectively, at macro and micro scales. The interaction of about 10exp(26) atoms builds one’s brain and synchronises the functions of the parts of one’s body. It seems that we exist in a “special” domain - somewhere between the macro and micro worlds? We describe what see in laws of physics and what we observe appears to depend on the sizes of the coupling bodies. The behaviour of the latter is seen as continuous at macro scales, e.g. the motion of a planet around the sun. In the micro world discrete (quantum) behaviour is observed. So we develop a scale dependent picture of the universe and wonder why its pieces refuse to fit in one self-consistent whole.

The laws of modern physics tell only how the bodies interact. They never explain why the interaction occurs that way because the underlying structure of the coupling bodies is always missing. This all-building structure will tell why and how the world works. Hence “why” is not a philosophical question, as some people like to think, “why” is a path toward the all-explaining texture of reality.

The classical - deterministic and quantum - probabilistic theories used in the description of the universe [e.g., 1-3] show how it appears in the observer’s mind. Maybe the classical and quantum realms branch from some unexplored underlying structure. In the string theory [e.g., 4] we are trying to unify branching worlds by adding extra dimensions to the picture of cosmos. One may rather take a greater effort to look for the root - the elusive underlying structure of nature that accounts why bodies couple as they do. The theory of interaction shows that in the terms of the building blocks of matter all meanings merge. Hence in these most initial (fundamental) terms why and how merge, i.e. the answer to why shows also how the all-building interaction, basic matter, evolves to create the universe and its observer.

We find ourselves at a “special” place, which is between what we see as space bodies and what comes from the interaction of as many as about 10exp(26) atoms building one’s mind. It is very unlikely that the laws of nature are specially accustomed to our scales. It is simpler to assume that there are all building scale-independent interactions. The mind images they create are described in two, seen as basic, classical and quantum theories. The laws of interaction should not depend on the sizes of the coupling bodies unless we want to face tough questions like who chooses which laws where to hold and how scale dependent laws are created. So we will bog in marshes of complexity unless we discover a way out of the “special” place, between the seen as continuous macro and the seen as discrete micro worlds. We should somehow bridge the gap between the classical and quantum domains in one scale independent picture of the universe in which the phenomenon of consciousness comes naturally.

The history of science has shown that the advance of knowledge hurts man’s narcissistic inclination for specialities. For example, the Earth was believed to be the centre of the universe only less than five centuries ago. Nowadays we know that we live on a small planet, which orbits an average star that moves around the nucleus of one of the many billions of galaxies belonging to the accessible universe. Our appreciation for divined origin was shattered by Darwin’s theory of evolution, suggesting that we are evolved apes. There are findings that indicate that the DNA of apes and humans are very close, implying a common ancestor. History shows that the prevailing believes of each period are dispelled as science goes deeper into the origin of space bodies and life. We see are made from objects that can reflect or emit some light. The properties of what we see as empty space between two coupling bodies are described with gravitational and electromagnetic interactions, which are mathematically expressed as fields. The puzzling underlying structure that creates what looks like empty space and coupling bodies is absent. So fundamental gravitational and electromagnetic interactions are introduced.

The more we dig into the structure of nature the more beliefs and specialities we leave behind. Anyway there is another “special” place we stubbornly stick to - the realm between the classical and quantum worlds. The interactions that build one’s brain occur in this poorly understood realm and somehow give rise to the enigmatic consciousness. If we accept the fundamental particularity of this domain, then difficulties will follow. This acceptance will make us indifferent of the well-established fact that simple rules can produce complex behaviors [5-7]. So we will overlook the principle of parsimony. Not to do with more, e.g. with more assumptions, what can be done with less! This principle, known also as Occam’s razor, is one of the basic tenets of science. It suggests that the simpler theory should be given preference until proven wrong. For example, the big bang theory offered a simpler explanation of the cosmic microwave background as a relic radiation, left after the big bang. In this way it gained a crucial advantage and sent into oblivion the rival steady-state theory of the universe. A possible path toward simplification is to assume that what we see and describe as classical and quantum realities is created from one underlying structure. It self-reproduces, self-similarly evolves at scales of its own in a way that creates the finite, i.e. not arbitrary large or small, building blocks of reality [8]. Thus we will incorporate the phenomenon of life, defined by its self-reproduction at the scales of observation [8]. The idea that the underlying structure of nature has to be found in the logic of evolution [9] is in agreement with a “firework universe” made of one self-reproducing and hence self-similarly evolving, fractal like, interaction. The latter is reveal and discussed as all-building unifying interaction or basic matter [8]. Its patterns oscillate in a way that creates the finite sources of reality, its discovered building bricks [8]. The mathematical description of these multiscale bricks is similar to that rendered by the laws and principles of the classical and quantum theory [8].

The basic objects of the theory of interaction and nature allow similar mathematical descriptions. Then we can discern between them only by their sizes. This suggests that we are shells of one self-similarly-evolving structure in which the atomic nuclei are like atomic size stars. Life is much simpler to be made of atomic size stars rather than from stardust and the hard big bang problems, which are associated with it. The theory of interaction shows that consciousness arises from universal self-definiteness, created as the found unifying interaction increases inward into the discovered structure of the bodies [8].

The expression of the classical and quantum theories in terms of discovered underlying structure is a great challenge met by the theory of interaction [8]. The principle of parsimony hints that two theories are more than what is enough for one universe. Hence theories that scale-invariantly model the underlying structure of nature will offer a deeper understanding than constructions based on structureless fundamental particles, born from a mysterious matter - antimatter asymmetry, appearing in a singularity allowing big bang universe beginning.

The problem with modern science is that it is frequently applied beyond its scope. We build constructions that work at the scales of observations. Afterwards we expect them to work at far different scales. The result is a maze of mysteries. This requires a more general approach in which the observations must be explained as cases, seen at the scales of the interactions that build the observer and his equipment [8]. The motion of a body draws the shape of the interaction applied to it. Hence the trajectories of motions offer clues for one all-building unifying interaction or basic matter that creates the finite sources of reality. Bodies are seen to move in circular or elliptical orbits. Others follow spiral paths. Electrons appear as “clouds” around atomic nuclei. What kind of underlying interaction explains what we see? This is the question asked and answered in the terms of theory of interaction.

The long sought unifying interaction has to be scale-independent to account simply for the observed complexity of nature. This perplexing complexity is likely to originate in the process of observation. The universe and its confused by findings observer are born from scale-independent interactions, whose self-similarity suggests an underlying fractal like structure [8]. It seems that the 21st century will be a time to appreciate the ordinary place mankind in a discovered scale-independent description of the universe. We look for what creates what we see since the birth of civilisation. We always seek a better, simpler and more direct explanation. In this way we pass by some seemingly “special” places on the long path toward the all-explaining structure of reality.

Yummykake www.yummykake.com/ has embarked on a new venture that could extend the artisan cake maker’s reputation from sea to shining sea.

The Oregon company has won the palates and minds of discerning Southern Oregon dessert eaters since moving from Iowa in July 2002 and setting up shop first in Ashland then in Medford in February 2004.

Owners Larry and Lisa Oswald have signed with Pacific West Marketing of San Juan Capistrano, which promotes products at trade shows or sells directly to the Microsofts and IBMs of the world.

“They approached me,” says Larry Oswald, 54, who repeatedly said no until local marketing consultant Tina Janke of TJ Consults Inc. www.tjconsults.com suggested it might be worth his while.

Because Yummykake’s ingredients make a for a decidedly short shelf-life, Oswald hadn’t presumed to extend his marketing reach until now.

“What I’ve been doing in Medford and Ashland with gourmet cakes takes refrigeration,” Oswald says. “That comes down to me shipping with dry ice. It can be done, but I didn’t want to get into dry-ice packaging and freezer space.”

But with a little innovation and thinking outside the cake box, Oswald blended a
truffle and cupcake into a new product line called the Trufflekake(SM), which is
rich, moist cake surrounded by truffle chocolate filling and a decorative shell.

“We don’t need dry ice to ship these with the weather we have right now,” Oswald says. “We can send them by next-day air and they arrive OK. In the heat of the summer, we’ll cold-pack them. But it doesn’t need dry ice like meats and ice
cream.”

The Oswalds ran a full-service bakery with annual sales of about $220,000 in Fairfield, Iowa, a town of 10,000, for more than a half-dozen years. About three years ago, they sold the bakery and moved to Ashland. But even though
Ashland had twice the population, the Oswalds found the going tough. First on Hersey Street, where they still make their cakes in an 1,800-square-foot shop, and then on Siskiyou Boulevard, the light, creamy cakes failed to draw a steady clientele.

Opening a second location at the Grandview Plaza on Roberts Road in Medford, a couple of doors down from Bruno’s Pizza, solved that problem. Oswald says Yummykake had sales of about $200,000 last year and projects revenues to hit
$250,000 this year. Weddings account for 30 percent of sales, the largest individual revenue slice, followed by birthdays and anniversaries.

“It seemed like no one ever has birthdays in Ashland and people couldn’t find Hersey Street,” Oswald says. “In order to survive, we had to move into Medford.”

Now, Yummykake is in position to do better than survive.

Ed Shriber of Pacific West Marketing www.pacificwestmarketing.com has promoted
product-driven companies to corporate gift buyers for more than a quarter-century.

Trufflekakes, measuring about 2 inches in diameter and the same in height, retails for $10 in individual gold-foil containers or six in a gift box going for $65. A flower box of six goes for $85.

Local customers, Oswald says, will find the same items available at Grandview Plaza below those rates.

Shriber, who will earn a commission on his sales, was at a trade show Monday and wasn’t available for comment.

Janke says corporate gifts are a good entry point into wholesale markets.

“There are only so many individuals who can afford most corporate gifts, but those who do, don’t care how much they spend,” says Medford marketing consultant Tina Janke, who has worked with Shriber for several years.

“There are many different reasons a company can give gifts, but food is a big thing for gifts Food Catalogs like Harry & David have taught us that.”
